I watched the Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominated film – 12 years a salve. And I honestly believe it Should not be allowed to be shown in cinemas (I might be exaggerating), or at least be an 18 and over film. I was traumatized. Slavery is a sensitive topic and being black it is even more sensitive towards me. I understand what happened during slavery, how the slaves were treated etc. But its a reality that I’ve never been able to get my head over. Human beings were treated as property, black people were stripped of freedom, identity, independence and culture.
This movie has been rated 3 out of 5 stars, 8.5 out of 10 and even 5 out 5 and I understand why in terms of the plot, the climax and the tension however I don’t think it can even be rated as a film. The film is not entertainment it is a painting of history, a painting of the harsh reality that black men and women suffered for four hundred years. The acting was absolutely phenomenal, it is one hundred per cent believable and I felt the emotion from each character, Lupita Nyong’o defiantly deserves an Oscar. I do recommend that it be watched for those who are not educated on the topic of slavery because it teaches a lot of the history, despite the fact that I was traumatized, it was an amazing cinematic experience as it was different, I cannot recall the last time a movie similar hit the box office, so it is defiantly worth watching.
